Stop the internet, I want to get off!
The internet is a great thing; it allows millions of people to publicise themselves on the web. Fine. It lets people from all around the world communicate. Fine. It lets people share information, ideas and jokes. Fine.
What isn't "fine", is the fact that it's killing peoples' ability to use correct spelling and grammar. Sure, I know that when you're posting something on the internet or writing a quick email to a friend, it doesn't matter if your spelling is wrong, or if you use "ur" or "your" instead of "you're". What does matter is that when you write like this every day, these shortcuts and mistakes will eventually work their way into your handwriting and everyday life.
It's scary how many people use bad grammar and spelling on the web; it's literally killing the English (and American and Canadian etc..) language and it's also lowering the standard of education among children. It feels like children can't add two numbers together without using a personal computer, never mind a calculator! I have this scary vision that we, and the internet, are educating a generation of illiterate children.
Sometimes I want to re-wind time and return to the days before the internet when children could spell you're and knew when to use it. Hell I even find myself using the wrong word at the wrong time.
Stop the internet..........!
