Book recommendation - "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding
I think the last time I proclaimed to have found my favourite book was when I first read "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card. That was a long time ago! Since then I've read many books but I haven't felt too strongly about most of them. They were either run-of-the-mill war, adventure, science fiction or spy novels or historical books that were packed full of details but little soul.
I finished re-reading "Lord of the Flies" yesterday having not touched it since school. So that's about 15 years! Obviously when you are made to read a book in school you never appreciate it for what it really is.
If you haven't read the book, buy it or borrow it from your library. It's an absolute classic; it's a great tale of human frailties and tragedy and is probably an incredible foresight into youth of any era. Once some of the children in the book realise that there are no adults present to maintain social integrity their lives degrade into chaos and anarchy. I find it to be a very dark story, in the sense that it portrays innocence turning to evil. My favourite part is the ending, but I won't explain why and spoil the storyline for you.
If I was rating the book I would definitely give it 9 out of 10 and maybe even 10 out of 10. Yes I do think it is that good, although you'll have to read it and reach your own conclusions.
